In practice this is a narrow category, it turns on the specific facts, and it is not something a recreational player stumbles into by having a good month.
What Is Different
- Interest and investment returns. If winnings sit in an account and earn interest, that interest is ordinary taxable income even though the original amount was not.
- Winnings abroad. Other countries apply their own rules; a US casino payout, for instance, may have tax withheld at source under American law regardless of the Canadian position.
- Professional status. Where it applies, losses and expenses come into the picture too, which is one reason it is rarely advantageous.
Why the Casino Still Asks About Money
Source-of-funds requests during verification have nothing to do with tax. They are anti-money-laundering obligations imposed on the operator by its licence, and they apply whether or not anything is taxable. Providing what is asked is the fastest route through; it does not create a tax liability and it is not reported as income.
